Day 1: Quillarumiyoq - Varpiso - Huatta - Chillipawa

Day one of your Moon Stone Trek welcomes you into the heart of the ancient Inca civilization. We’ll pick you up from your hotel and transport you to the trailhead at Quillarumiyoc, the Moon Temple. This archaeological site, renowned for its carved stone in the shape of a moon, sets the tone for the historical and cultural journey that lies ahead.

From Quillarumiyoc, our path leads us through the serene Andean landscape to Varpiso. Here, we’ll meet our team of local horsemen, integral to the smooth running of our journey. As we continue, we cross the beautiful Huaracondo River and trek uphill amidst stunning vistas, with the Andean peaks providing a splendid backdrop.

Our first significant stop is Huatta, a pre-Inca fortress brimming with history and mystery. After exploring this site, we’ll proceed to Chillipawa, a charming hamlet where we’ll set up camp for the night. Here, under the Peruvian night sky, you’ll experience the tranquillity of the Andean countryside and the warm hospitality of the local people.

Day two begins with the invigorating mountain air and a hearty breakfast. We’ll trek uphill to Puccacasa Pass, a journey that provides unparalleled views of Cusco, Mt Ausangate, and Mount Veronica. The diverse flora and fauna along the path add to the richness of the experience, and you may even spot a condor soaring above.

We’ll have a lunch break at a scenic spot, giving you an opportunity to refuel and absorb the stunning surroundings. Post-lunch, we’ll descend to our campsite at Chancachuco. This serene spot nestled under the Huaynay Glaciers is the perfect place to unwind, reflect on the day’s experiences, and rejuvenate for the next day’s adventures.

Day three takes us through the stunning Puncuyoc canyon, a natural wonder that underscores the diversity of the Andean landscape. The trail leads us through the lush Silque Valley and along an original Inca path, offering a tangible connection to the ancient civilization. Keep your eyes open for local wildlife, including the elusive Spectacled Bear!

After a satisfying lunch, we’ll explore the historic Inti Punku, or the Sun Gate, an integral part of Inca architecture. The day ends at the Inca Quarry, a site that holds a deep archaeological significance. Setting up camp at this unique location, you’ll feel the whispers of history lull you to sleep.

Day four offers a change of pace as we embark on a leisurely downhill hike, exploring the regions between the Inca Quarry and Ollantaytambo. This ancient town, with its Inca ruins and terraced hillsides, is a delightful place to explore.

We’ll then hop onto a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. This quaint town, nestled amidst towering mountains and a roaring river, offers hot springs, local markets, and charming cafes. The evening is yours to explore the town, soak your muscles in the thermal baths, or simply relax in the comfort of your hotel.

Our final day takes us to the crown jewel of our journey – Machu Picchu. We’ll catch the first bus of the day to the site, giving you a chance to witness the sunrise over the ancient city – a truly magical experience. A guided tour will help you understand the historical and architectural significance of the site.

After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore Machu Picchu at your own pace. You can choose to hike to the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge, or simply wander around the ruins, soaking in the atmosphere.

Eventually, we’ll leave the ancient city behind, returning to Aguas Calientes by bus. From there, a train and a private van will transport us back to Cusco. As we drop you off at your hotel, our unforgettable journey together comes to an end, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
