We will pick you up early from your hotel at 4:30 am; we will then head in our private van for 3 hours through different picturesque villages and beautiful landscapes until the beginning of the trail, called Upis town (4,350mt / 14,272ft), where we will meet up our local muleteers, horses, and get ready for the adventure of Ausangate trek to the Rainbow Mountain.
After hiking gradually uphill for three hours following the highland valley inhabited by llamas and alpacas with breathtaking vistas of Ausangate in the backdrop, we will arrive at our first lunch spot located in Pamparapa at 4,600 meters above sea level (15,092 feet), at the base of Ausangate Mountain – the highest peak in the Cusco region.
Following lunch, we’ll hike for 2 hours to get the first pass called Arapa Pass 4,800 m/ 15,748 ft; at this point, we’ll be impressed by stunning views of eroded mountains and highland valleys, we also have the chance to see vicuñas and condors. After taking some pictures, we walk downhill for 1.5 hours to our evening campsite, Yana Qocha at 4,650 meters above sea level (15,256 feet) – a place with amazing views around the Ausangate mountain. Later we will have afternoon tea, followed by dinner.
We will wake up quite early with coca tea or coffee delivered to your tent and enjoy a delicious breakfast, with a gorgeous sunrise over the glacier peak and mountains. Following a hearty breakfast, we will begin our hike along a gently sloping trail (up and down) into a valley of blue glacial lakes and waterfalls. This section of the Ausangate hike is picturesque, with fantastic scenery and beautiful glacial lakes such as Yana Qocha (black lake) and Puca Qocha (red lake).
After hiking for 1.5 hours, we will start hiking up on a switchback trail to the Punca Qocha Pass located 5,000 meters above sea level (16,404 feet). This pass boasts incredible views and as we reach the top we will be rewarded with 360 views of one of the most incredible landscapes on earth, as well as, dramatic views of Ausangate peak from the back and Vilcanota mountain range going in a different direction and colorful hills surrounded by rugged mountain peaks with the great valley below.
After conquering the pass, we continue through a vivid green valley full of alpacas and llamas; if we are lucky, we might catch a glimpse of an Andean Condor or the rare vicuña as we approach our lunch spot located at the place called Ananta 4,650 m/ 15,256 ft. So after lunch, we start with the uphill climb – Ananta Pass. From here, you will see the beautiful Rainbow Mountain in the distance, and the views are still awe-inspiring. The last section is downhill for 30-45 minutes to get to the second campsite, called Qomer Qocha, located 4,680 meters above sea level (15,354feet).
Today is a great day as we enjoy a sunrise at the top of Rainbow Mountain while walking one of the most beautiful trails in the Cusco region! This morning, we will wake up early to enjoy breakfast. Then we’ll walk uphill for 1.5 hours to reach our last destination – The impressive Rainbow Mountain of Vinicunca.
