In this four day trek to Ausangate over the Andes, we will appreciate two of the attractions of this Tour:
Vinicunca: The rainbow aspect of Vinicunca is due to a complex geological history of marine, lacustrine, and fluvial sediments that, over time, the sediments formed layers that today are seen as the stripes that attract tourists so much.
Ausangate: Considered the largest tropical glacier in Peru with a maximum height of 6380 meters above sea level. This white giant is considered a world thermometer to measure global warming and the melting of glaciers, a sacred mountain in the time of the Incas.
A walk on the true Andes Cusqueños.

Acclimatization:
We recommend you be in Cusco at least 2 days before your trek to be acclimatized to Cusco’s altitude so that you won’t have a problem during the tour.
About us:
Peru Tripper is a direct local tour operator in Cusco – Peru; we never share our tours with other companies as most of them do to minimize operating costs. We don’t work with intermediaries or have hidden prices; we have the best local guides and professionals. We guarantee that your travel expenditures will support the local economy, and improve the lives of local Peruvians, due to the simple reason we are a local business!
Early in the morning, we leave Cusco, traveling in our private transport in the direction of the small town of Tinqui. We will see the impressive Vilcanota mountain range pass through several traditional Andean villages en route and take time to stop to take some photos. When we arrive, we will have time for breakfast. This is where our muleteers will arrange all the group’s luggage and horse packs and our trek officially begins.
We start our walk through the farming communities and enjoy the impressive views of the mountains. We will walk for around 3 hours, and then it’s time for a lunch stop. After lunch, we continue for another 2 hours to reach Upis (4,100 masl). We will have the opportunity to bathe in the local hot springs before dinner and camp for the night in this place.
Hiking time: 3.5 hours
Hiking Distance: 11 Km / 8.83 miles
Meals: Lunch, Tea, Dinner.
After a big breakfast, we are ready to leave our camp and start our trek for the day. We will ascend to Paso Arapa (4,850 masl). From this pass, we will enjoy the contrast between the dry desert like the hills and the impressive snow-covered views of the highest snowy peak in the City of Cusco, the Ausangate, and we will also be able to see the Pucacocha lagoon.
This area also has three beautiful lakes with shades of red, green and turquoise (Pucacocha, Hatun Pucacocha, and Qomercocha). Our second camp is near the Ausangate glacier on the shores of the Pucachocha lagoon.
Hiking time: 6 – 7 hours
Hiking Distance: 11 Km / 8.83 miles
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner.
Today will be one of the most beautiful days of the trek. We will see the rainbow mountains in the distance. In addition, we will pass through the town of Alccatauri, where we will see the traditional life of the community. The day begins with an ascent of 1 hour and a half until reaching the Ausangate pass (4,930 masl). In this pass, we will see red mountains, and we will also have the opportunity to see vicuñas, chinchillas, and alpacas.
After enjoying the pass, we will descend for 2 hours until we reach the town of Alccatauri (4,400 masl). During our time in the village, we will give gifts of coca leaves to the locals. This is valuable because this Peruvian staple food cannot be grown in this climate. After this incomparable experience, we will take a further 30-minute walk uphill to our lunch spot in a rustic lodge.
After a satisfying lunch, we will begin our journey to the Minasniyuq pass. We will have our first views of the rainbow mountains (5,020 masl). We will make offerings to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) in this step.
The rest of the day’s journey is a one-hour hike down to our camp, Surine Cocha (4,800 masl). The base camp is on the shores of the magnificent Lake Surine.
Hiking time: 7 – 8 hours
Hiking Distance: 15 Km / 9.32 miles
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner.
After breakfast, we walk gradually for 2 hours until we reach the famous Rainbow Mountain (5,020 masl). Our guide will take you to the best places to get the perfect pictures of these incredible mountains and the other surrounding mountains.

Not only is this one of the most amazing places in Peru and South America, but these types of mountains are also seen in only one other country in the world, China.
After taking photos and enjoying the view, we will continue hiking until we reach Quesiuno. This is a 2 1/2 hour downhill hike through the red valley. We will have lunch there.

What if I suffer from altitude sickness?
Our tour guide is professional; he will treat you accordingly with the oxygen tank; we always provide an oxygen tank for this kind of tour.
WOW. That is all I have to say. This was breathtaking and well worth the effort. Make sure you are well acclimated before you go or you WILL have issues. The campsite amenities are wonderful and each spot offers incredible views. It does get cold at night, so bring warm night clothes. And do not forget your poncho or rain gear if you go in the rainy season, it is so wet. Oh and, please wear sunscreen. My boyfriend did not put it on the first day and had mega burn!
