Do not hesitage to give us a call. We are an expert team and we are happy to talk to you.
In only two days, this tour of horseback riding visiting Piuray, Huaypo lagoons, and the archaeological center of Moray will give you an unforgettable experience, as it is a perfect combination of culture, nature, adventure, and interaction with a rural community and its lively culture. We guarantee that we are the only company that offers this type of tour.
Approximately 5 hours will be spent on the horseback each day.
We will pass through the Chinchero village. We are lucky enough to spend time with a local community, who will show us how they keep living in a very traditional way. We will sleep in their rustic accommodations in the village.
Our Peruvian Paso horse can have different rhythms and speeds, which the same horse can execute. This equine is considered the best saddle horse due to the smoothness of its walk, easy treatment, and stable temperament. Therefore, it is unnecessary to be a professional horseman to ride it efficiently.
Departure & Return Location:
Hotel Cusco.
Departure Time:
Pick up from your hotel (7:00am – 7:30am).
We will come and pick you up from your hotel in the private transport that will take us to the Chinchero, the starting point of our horseback riding tour.
During the trip, you will enjoy spectacular landscapes, our horses will be waiting for you at Chinchero and there you will receive a brief explanation on the handling of the Peruvian Paso horse, a demonstration of how to ride it and the familiarization with it that will be useful during the tour.
Later we will start the ride to the Piuray Lagoon. This lagoon, which is over 3,450 meters above sea level, provides drinking water to Cusco since the time of the Incas, who brought their water to the Imperial City through underground aqueducts. On its origin, there is a legend that tells that the Sun God asked Manco Cápac that his twin sons accompany him in his decline, and when the moment came, they discovered that the son, who walked farther, had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter in the Piuray lagoon.
After visiting the Piuray Lagoon, we will continue riding, passing through the town of Chinchero, to the beautiful Huaypo Lagoon (3,400 masl) where we will have a picnic lunch on the shores of the lagoon and for this we will go on our horses to a Quiet place with a privileged view of the mountains and snow-capped peaks of the area.
So, you will enjoy the region’s natural beauty for its varied flora and fauna in which migratory and native birds stand out. You will learn about the agricultural activity carried out by the peasants of the area.
Once we concluded the visit to the lagoon and its surroundings, we will go to a rural community where its inhabitants will welcome us. We will spend the night in rustic lodging and have dinner with the inhabitants of the community. Remember that when doing rural community tourism, you will be directly contributing to the development of the communities of the area, this being a first-order aspect in the philosophy of our company.
After having our breakfast and enjoying a beautiful sunrise in the community, we will receive a demonstration of the textile process, from the shearing to the dyeing of the fabrics, on the part of the community’s women who dedicate themselves to this activity. Later we will say goodbye to the residents to continue our journey on horseback to the Wañyn viewpoint located 4,500 meters above sea level.
Starting from the place where we will leave our horses, the ascent to reach the Wañyn viewpoint will take us approximately 40 minutes of walking or an hour and a half for those who want to get the top of the mountain.
From the viewpoint, you will enjoy a panoramic view of much of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the mountain range of the Vilcanota, snowy peaks such as the “Waqaq Willka” (the holy mountain that cries), known as La Verónica (5,682 meters), the Chicón (guardian of the Sacred Valley with 5,530 meters) and the Ausangate (6,372 meters) and the plateaus of Maras and Chinchero that rise up along the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
In this viewpoint, we will perform a beautiful ceremony called K’intu where you can ask the mountains for their most desired wish. Later we will continue our descent on foot (approximately 1 hour) to the archaeological complex of Moray or “Inca agricultural experimentation center.”
The descent from the Wañyn to Moray will allow you to get an “aerial” view of its four circumferences, which are not possible to admire in a conventional visit to this complex. Moray is located at 3,385 meters above sea level and 38 km. Northwest of the capital of the Inca Empire.
It is an essential archaeological complex in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. One of its most interesting attractions is the “greenhouses” or Inca agricultural “laboratories” consisting of circular terraces built in large holes used to preserve seeds and crops.
Once the visit to this singular place is finished, we will continue the ride to the salt mines of Maras, but before arriving at them, we will make a stop on the way to have a picnic and enjoy lunch. To do this, we will go on our horses to a quiet place with a privileged view of the mountains and snow-capped mountains of the area.
After this break, we will continue the walk to the Salineras or salt mines, as they are also known, located 40 km away. From the city of Cusco and at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level, which constitutes a large area of salt extraction for human consumption that dates back to pre-colonial times.
These mines are made up of around 4,000 natural wells of salt water, about 5 m2 in length, located in the foothills of the hills, and you can still see the ancestral method of obtaining salt.
The salt mines represent an important source of work for the residents of Maras and other nearby towns.
Once the pictures are taken and we admire the impressive wells, we will ride to Maras where we will say goodbye to the horses and the local team that accompanied us along the route.
After this we will return to the city of Cusco.
