Huaraz – Pitec – Lake Churup – Huaraz
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Huaraz (3100m / 10,170 ft) to Pitec (3850m / 12,631 ft), the starting point of the trek. Along the way, you’ll pass through the traditional villages of Unchus and Llupa, known for their adobe houses and picturesque farmland. Here, you may encounter Quechua farmers working the land by hand, dressed in traditional clothing, offering a glimpse into local Andean culture.
Upon arriving at Pitec, you’ll check in at the Huascaran National Park ranger station before beginning the ascent. The trail follows a ridge, gradually climbing through rocky terrain with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. After approximately 1.5 hours, you’ll reach a steep, rocky section near a waterfall. This is the most challenging part of the trek and involves a 45-minute climb to reach the lake. For safety, there is an alternate route with a metal rope to assist in the ascent.
Once you reach Lake Churup (4450m / 14,600 ft), you’ll be greeted by its crystal-clear waters, reflecting the jagged peaks and rugged landscapes that surround it. Take time to relax, explore the lakeside, and enjoy your box lunch while immersing yourself in the serene beauty of the Andes.
After spending time at the lake, retrace your steps back down the trail to Pitec, where your private transportation will be waiting to take you back to Huaraz. You’ll arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon, completing an unforgettable day of exploration.
